“A vacation is a sunburn at premium prices”
~ Hal Chadwicke
When I visit my parents,
it's like I get on an amusement park ride that I don't have to pay for
that consists mostly of working washing machines, a never-empty refrigerator, surround sound
and expensive shampoo.
and expensive shampoo.
To some people, this ride might seem boring. Not to me. I love this ride. This ride is awesome. This ride is my version of a vacation. This ride is my only vacation. So I soak up every air-conditioned, 19847 channeled minute.
Old friends, familiar roads, rambling farms...these are things I fall in love with each and every time I come back here. I don't love them enough to stay, obviously, but certainly enough to deal with two layovers and billions of screaming babies and a week of humidity.
As much as I wish I had the money to watch a hot cabana boy bring me a pineapple-flavored drink as I sit on a deck chair on some white sandy beach, going home is still pretty great. It's like a reboot. A What's-Important reboot. And sometimes I need that.
But I could do without the frizzy hair.

Sounds like a good time, frizzy hair or not. ;)
Glad to hear you're having fun!
And gawwwd I could use a pineapple drink right now too. Lol.
Relaxing is what vacation is all about. Sometimes its definitely more relaxing to not pay for an expensive vacation.
And even though I agree with all of that, I STILL WANT THAT PINEAPPLE DRINK! :)
I sometimes feel that way about going home, but my hometown is only about an hour from where I live now so I don't think it's far enough for me to really appreciate going back. I think living out of state would definitely do the trick.
Also, I love going over to my mom's house to eat her food. Sometimes I do so when I'm not even hungry just because the selection is irresistible. ;-)
Nothing felt quite look going home for some parental TLC when I lived away!
I love going home! There's food there that I never make for myself...like lasagna!
Enjoy your home-cation!
oh man. i know what you mean, my parents place is bliss. it's out in the middle of nowhere, so peaceful and awesome and relaxing.
hope you have a fantastic break, dear
Expensive shampoo sounds like a great vacation to me!
Plus, rides can jar the back and neck these days. I'm getting old. I prefer cable TV and air conditioning over all that anyhow.
Glad you're back to your roots for a week! Have fun!
If you can relax in your family's presence, more power to you...because that is a challenge!
Oh my god, I know what you mean. The washer and the dryer are nice. But so is the softer toilet paper. It's like wiping your butt with a brand new towel.
Sigh, home.
Well you know I loved this post. My daughter was here for about a second over the weekend. She had flown to New York for a wedding last Thursday, by Friday the Sunday wedding had been moved to Friday night and everything was starting to close because of hurricane Irene. She was staying on Long Island-where the storm was supposed to hit and she had to be back to work in Orlando on Tuesday. So-we got her on one of the last flights out of New York City and into Chicago on Saturday morning, drove 4 hours home and then had her in Indianapolis Monday morning and on a plane back to Florida.
I told her that it was all too sudden for us to plan anything exciting and she said she could care less, she was home, we were here and she could have stress free sleep, homecooked food and do her laundry!
Gosh, there is really much worthwhile data here!
